Fire safety in Turkey's buildings is governed by the Regulation on Fire Protection of Buildings and linked standards. Which facility needs which system depends on criteria such as building height, occupancy class, enclosed area and fire load. The summary below is for information; the exact requirement is set by your architectural project and the competent fire department's assessment.
Typical systems by occupancy
- Housing and offices: smoke detectors, extinguishers, emergency lighting; fire cabinets and an alarm panel in tall buildings
- Hotels, hospitals, schools: addressable alarms, audible warning, evacuation lighting, sprinklers in some areas
- Warehouses and factories: sprinklers, fire pump set, detectors, hydrants
- Data centres and archives: early detection (VESDA type), gas suppression
- Kitchens: hood suppression systems
Relevant standards
The TS EN 54 series covers detection and alarm devices, TS EN 12845 sprinkler systems, TS EN 15004 gas suppression systems, TS EN 3 portable extinguishers and TS EN 671 hose cabinets. Products and systems must conform to these standards and test reports must be kept.
Maintenance obligation
The regulation and related standards require periodic maintenance and testing of fire safety systems. Extinguishers need an annual check and refilling/hydrostatic testing according to their life; detection systems need an annual function test and regular cleaning; sprinkler systems need weekly/monthly checks and an annual test.
