Sprinklers for a warehouse, gas for a data centre. What about in-between cases? Five criteria to look at before deciding.
There is no answer to 'which is better?' when choosing an automatic suppression system; the right question is 'which is right for my facility?' Sprinklers and gas systems solve different problems and are used together in most facilities. Here are five criteria that influence the choice.
1. Value protected and type of damage
Water can save a warehouse but destroy a server room. For water-sensitive assets such as electronic equipment, archives, artworks and libraries, gas systems are appropriate. In pallet warehouses, production lines and commercial areas sprinklers are more economical and effective.
2. Size of the area
Gas systems work in enclosed, tight volumes. In rooms up to a few hundred cubic metres their cost is reasonable. Gas cannot be applied in open warehouses of thousands of square metres; there sprinklers are the only sensible option.
3. Human presence
Gas systems have limits for human safety depending on the agent. CO₂ is used only in unoccupied areas; clean agents (HFC-227ea, FK-5-1-12) can also be used in occupied areas at design concentration. In every case a pre-discharge warning and evacuation time must be defined.
4. Maintenance and operating cost
Sprinkler systems need a water tank, pump set and valve checks. Gas systems need cylinder pressure and weight, trigger lines and room integrity checks. Recharging cost is high when gas is discharged; with sprinklers water is cheap but water damage after a fire can cost money.
5. Regulation and insurance
For some occupancy classes the regulation makes sprinklers mandatory. Insurers often look for gas systems in critical areas such as data centres. Clarifying fire department and insurance requirements before starting a project avoids costly revisions.
Using both together
A whole building can have sprinklers and a gas system in the data centre inside it. The detection system coordinates both: designing the sprinkler heads in the gas zone as pre-action prevents accidental water discharge.

When deciding, weigh business continuity as much as cost. An hour of downtime in a data centre can cost much more than the system itself. The fast extinguishing and absence of residue in a gas system therefore makes the investment decision easier. In a large warehouse, on the other hand, sprinklers keep a fire under control before it grows, limiting structural damage and stoppage. When comparing the two, include insurance premium discounts in your calculation; they often shorten the payback period.
